Community rallies behind family of beloved coach, father of 4 shot to death at Birmingham barber shop

The Birmingham community is rallying behind a mother and her four children following a heart-wrenching tragedy that unfolded this past weekend at a local barber shop.

A Community in Mourning

Jorge Fonseca, a 34-year-old husband, father, and respected youth baseball coach, lost his life Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred following an argument with another man outside La Vida Barberia Spa Y Estilismo on West Valley Avenue.

Authorities have charged 36-year-old Magdaleno Mendoza with provocation manslaughter in connection with the shooting, which occurred just after 3:30 p.m. You can read more about the charges filed against Mendoza here.

Tragedy Unfolds

Fonseca’s wife, Brenda, and their children were present at the scene when the violence erupted. According to Birmingham Police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, officers and fire medics were dispatched to the strip mall, but despite life-saving efforts, Fonseca was pronounced dead on the sidewalk. The shooting occurred during a quiet Saturday afternoon, leaving witnesses and the community in shock.

Preliminary investigations suggest that both men were customers at the business and knew each other prior to the physical altercation. Following the shooting, Mendoza reportedly fled the scene but was apprehended by police within 15 minutes.

Supporting the Fonseca Family

In the wake of this devastating loss, a GoFundMe has been established to assist the family. With over $11,000 already raised, the community is looking to provide Brenda—a devoted stay-at-home mother—the necessary financial buffer to navigate the loss of her partner and the family's primary provider.

The fundraiser emphasizes the immediate needs of the four children, all under the age of 12, including groceries, essentials, and funeral expenses. The goal is to allow the family time and space to grieve without the immediate pressure of mounting bills. Those who wish to contribute to the family can make a donation here.
