Alabama sending payments to help families buy food while school’s out: How much you can get
Alabama will provide one-time payments to families to help with grocery costs.
Summer break brings plenty of excitement for Alabama students, but it also creates unique financial pressures for families managing grocery bills. To help bridge that gap, Alabama is launching a new program to provide one-time payments aimed at keeping kids fed while school is out of session.
Understanding Alabama SUN Bucks
The initiative, officially known as Alabama SUN Bucks or Summer EBT, offers a $120 payment for each qualifying school-aged child. Nancy Buckner, commissioner of the Alabama Department of Human Resources, emphasized the necessity of the program in a recent press release. With the cost of groceries and gas rising, Buckner noted that the benefit is designed to help families navigate the summer months while promoting healthy, nutritious eating habits for children.
Who Qualifies and How to Apply
Many families will see the assistance arrive automatically. The DHR confirms that enrollment is automatic for children who currently receive benefits through SNAP, TANF, or Medicaid via the school demonstration project. Participation in the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, or status as a foster child also triggers automatic enrollment.
For families not currently enrolled in those programs, there is still an opportunity to secure support. Those meeting specific income requirements can apply for the benefit, but the deadline to submit an application is August 15.
Using Your SUN Bucks
Eligible students will receive an Alabama SUN Bucks card, with payments beginning to roll out this month. Once issued, the funds remain available for use for up to four months.
The card is designated for grocery staples, including:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Meats and dairy products
- Bread and cereals
- Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages
It is important to note that these funds cannot be used for hot foods, pet supplies, household cleaning items, hygiene products, or medicine.
The program is a joint effort administered by the DHR and the Alabama State Department of Education. For more details on eligibility or to learn more about the program, visit the official Alabama SUN Bucks website or call 1-800-443-3536.
