Officials confirmed the victims as 24-year-old Erasmo David Matias of Birmingham and 29-year-old Sulema Marisol Ovalle-Pacaya of Bessemer.

The fatal wreck occurred at 4:39 a.m. on Sunday near the Greens Springs Avenue exit on I-65.

Investigators report that Matias was operating a Honda Civic at the time of the crash, with Ovalle-Pacaya riding as his passenger. First responders pronounced both victims deceased at the scene at 5:07 a.m.

Ongoing Investigation

The crash involved two vehicles. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel transported one individual from the second vehicle to a local hospital for treatment. The incident caused significant disruption, leading to the closure of that stretch of the interstate for several hours.
