Travel Alert: FAA Suspends Flights to Popular Caribbean Destination

The Federal Aviation Administration has imposed a 30-day flight ban to Haiti due to rising gang violence.

The decision follows a series of incidents where gangs opened fire on aircraft, including an attack on a Spirit Airlines plane as it was landing in Port-au-Prince last week. One flight attendant was injured, and the airport was briefly shut down. In response to the escalating threat, the United Nations has also paused flights to the country.

JetBlue and American Airlines also confirmed their planes were struck by gunfire while departing Port-au-Prince last week.

This surge in violence coincides with the swearing-in of Haiti's new appointed Prime Minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, following the ousting of Garry Connille after just six months in office. Media reports indicate that since January, over 3,600 people have been killed in the unrest, and more than 500,000 have been displaced from their homes.
