Post office’s new service might be popular but it comes with a $5.51 fee

The U.S. Postal Service is rolling out a fresh initiative aimed at making local online transactions safer and more convenient for buyers and sellers. While the program offers a secure alternative to the traditional meet-up, it does come with a price tag.

Meet Local Xchange

The new program, USPS Local Xchange, provides a dedicated third-party location for exchanges—ideal for items bought on sites like Facebook Marketplace. According to the postal service, this service aims to save time and reduce risk by enabling transactions without the need for face-to-face meetings.

How the Process Works

To get started, sellers need a free USPS.com account. Once registered, they are directed to a USPS Smart Locker to drop off their packaged items. To fit, packages must be no larger than 22.5 inches by 19.5 inches by 14.5 inches.

For buyers, the process is straightforward: provide your name and email to receive a unique QR code. When you arrive at the post office, simply scan the code to unlock the locker and retrieve your purchase. Buyers have a five-day window to pick up their items. If a package remains uncollected after five days, it moves to the service counter, and if it isn't picked up within 15 days, it is shipped back to the seller.

Fees and Eligibility

This added layer of security carries a fee of $5.51 per transaction. It is important to note that the service is not available at every post office; participants must use locations equipped with digital Smart Lockers. Additionally, the locker must be located within 50 miles of the seller’s return address.

Prohibited Items

Standard mailing restrictions apply to Local Xchange. Prohibited items include live animals, fireworks, HAZMAT materials, mercury thermometers, day-old poultry, and cremated remains.
