The U.S. Coast Guard’s decision to purchase the Birmingham-Southern College (BSC) campus is a historic turning point for Birmingham. As Chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Appropriations, I have worked closely with Coast Guard leadership to secure the resources necessary for our nation’s maritime protectors. When the service identified a need for a modern training facility to support its goal of expanding the force by 15,000 members, the BSC campus emerged as the perfect solution.

A Strategic Expansion

The Coast Guard is undergoing a massive transformation, including a workforce increase of more than 30%. While Basic Training remains in Cape May, New Jersey, the service requires additional classrooms, gyms, kitchens, and residence halls to meet its mission. After a national search, the BSC campus proved to be the ideal choice, offering a location that is nearly move-in ready at a fraction of the cost of new construction. President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2027 Budget request specifically includes $73 million for new training operations, with $21.6 million earmarked for the Birmingham-Southern site.

What to Expect at Training Center Birmingham-Southern

Operations are set to begin by the end of 2026, with full functionality expected by mid-2027. Designated as the Coast Guard’s Enlisted Training Center of Excellence, the campus will accommodate 1,200 students at a time, with courses ranging from five weeks to several months. While the facility will prioritize classroom instruction, leadership development, and physical fitness rather than water-based drills, it will serve as a vital hub for training the brave men and women who secure our borders and save lives.

Honoring a Rich Legacy

The acquisition preserves the storied history of a campus that has been a cornerstone of the Bush Hills neighborhood since its predecessor, Southern University, was founded in 1856. Located just a mile from the iconic Legion Field and Rickwood Field, this 192-acre site is deeply woven into the fabric of Alabama. The Coast Guard is committed to preserving the BSC branding throughout the grounds, ensuring that the legacy of an institution that has produced countless business leaders, athletes, and public servants remains intact.

This 100-year investment by the Coast Guard goes beyond an economic boost. It represents a new chapter where Coast Guard families will become part of our local community—worshipping, schooling, and building friendships with Alabamians. I was proud to lead the effort to bring this mission to our city, and I am certain that our community will embrace our new neighbors as they carry on the proud tradition of this campus for generations to come.
