Mardi Gras season will cause changes in Senior Bowl date, coaching format for 2027

The Panini Senior Bowl is preparing for a significant shake-up in 2027. While the game date is shifting by only one day compared to this year, the adjustment places the event into an entirely different spot on the NFL calendar.

A Change in Timing

The 2027 contest is locked in for Jan. 30. Traditionally, the Senior Bowl occupies the "bye week" Saturday positioned between the AFC and NFC championship games and the Super Bowl, as seen on Jan. 31, 2026. However, next year's game will take place just one day prior to the conference championship games and 15 days before the Feb. 14 Super Bowl.

The culprit for this calendar shift is Mobile’s signature event: Mardi Gras. With Fat Tuesday occurring on Feb. 9, 2027, the city lacks the necessary hotel and convention space to host the influx of thousands of NFL personnel and media members during that timeframe.

Adapting to the Calendar

"The reason why we did that is because we were going to bump into Mardi Gras that year," Senior Bowl executive director Drew Fabianich explained at the annual Alabama Sports Writers Association convention in Jacksonville. "We’re kind of the second banana, to be honest with you. Mardi Gras, they’re booked out for five to six years at a time on just convention space. So that was the challenge."

Fabianich noted that the event will return to its traditional scheduling in following years, but the 2027 constraints necessitate a temporary return to the old coaching format. While the league moved to a "blended" staff model in 2022, the 2027 Senior Bowl will feature full NFL coaching staffs from the two teams with the worst regular-season records whose head coaches remain employed for 2028.

"We have to revert back to the way it was just for one year just because we’re pressed up so close," Fabianich added. "But then it will revert right back to the blended staffs for the next year when we have that week, because the calendar doesn’t let us have the time to work with the league to put the blended staffs together."
