Rocket City Takes Flight
Huntsville secured the top spot after being evaluated across more than 100 factors, including health, safety, real estate, transportation, and economics. Out of more than 2,000 communities reviewed, the Rocket City shined due to its high-quality schools, abundant green spaces, and iconic landmarks like the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
Livability awarded Huntsville a quality of life score of 873 out of 1,000. The publication highlighted the city's impressive growth, low unemployment, and a robust job market anchored by sectors like aerospace, engineering, and technology. Major players like NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the Redstone Arsenal, Boeing Company, Huntsville Hospital, and Mazda Toyota Manufacturing keep the economy soaring while maintaining a cost of living that sits below the national average.
More Than Just Business
Beyond the tech and defense industries, Huntsville has established itself as a premier destination for recreation and culture. Residents enjoy outdoor adventures at Monte Sano State Park and Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. The local arts scene is anchored by the Orion Amphitheater and Lowell Mill ARTS & Entertainment, while sports fans can catch minor league action with the Rocket City Trash Pandas in nearby Madison.
Birmingham Cracks the Top 10
Huntsville isn't the only Alabama city making waves. Birmingham earned the No. 7 spot on the list with a quality of life score of 802. Livability praised the city for successfully transitioning from an industrial steel hub into a center for innovation, medical research, and culture. With its mix of James Beard Award-winning dining and a neighborly atmosphere, Birmingham continues to prove why it is a rising star.
