Keelon Russell is ‘way ahead of schedule’ in key area, per Ryan Grubb

For any quarterback, the real work begins before the ball is even snapped. It requires a sharp football IQ to diagnose a defense, identify threats, and execute rapid adjustments in real time.

Russell Ahead of the Curve

Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb shared a positive update on Tuesday, noting that new starter Keelon Russell is demonstrating a grasp of the pre-snap process that has him “way ahead of schedule.”

“A lot of time, it’s really just having discipline from play to play,” Grubb explained. “You know exactly where your eyes should be, what defender is going to give you the keys you need, and then being consistent with that process. He really honed that process down over the summer and into camp.”

While Grubb is quick to point out that Russell isn't a ten-year veteran just yet, the progress is undeniable. The coordinator noted that while Russell was merely “good, not great” during the most recent scrimmage, he has elevated his performance to a “great” level during the two practices that followed.

Setting the Stage for Sept. 5

Named the starting quarterback this past Saturday, Russell now has two weeks to sharpen his chemistry with the first-team offense. He is set to make his college debut on Saturday, Sept. 5, against East Carolina.

Grubb has been impressed by the young signal-caller's command of the field. “He’s really taken the bull by the horns as a starter and embodied that,” Grubb said. “We have a ton of confidence in him. He’s playing confident and operating at an incredibly high level right now.”

As Russell prepares for his first start, the message from the coaching staff remains centered on consistency. Grubb's advice to his quarterback is simple: “The only sin right now is that he starts thinking he has to play off schedule. Stay on schedule, play within the platform of the game, and he’ll be okay.”
