Bessemer police and firefighters were called to the parking lot of the Walmart on Academy Drive about 1:13 p.m.
A violent confrontation on a charter bus in the parking lot of the Bessemer Walmart on Academy Drive has left one person dead and two others injured. Bessemer police and fire officials were dispatched to the scene around 1:13 p.m. Monday following reports of a stabbing.
The Investigation
Authorities report the bus was transporting 40 employees from Fess Security back to New Orleans following their work at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. According to Sgt. Chris Selman, the altercation, which began in the back of the bus after a scheduled stop, is believed to have been sparked by a dispute over a woman.
While the bus driver attempted to intervene, they were not injured during the scuffle. One victim was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham in critical condition and tragically succumbed to their injuries. The two other victims also received treatment at UAB and remain in stable condition.
Suspect in Custody
Local law enforcement acted swiftly, locating and taking a suspect into custody near St. Aloysius Catholic Church just blocks away from the Walmart parking lot. Fess Security has not provided official comment on the incident. A secondary bus was coordinated to transport the remaining security personnel back to Louisiana.
