72-year-old charged in weekend shooting of man, woman in Shelby County

A 72-year-old Wilsonville resident is in custody following a weekend shooting in Shelby County that left two people injured. James Troy Wafford was taken into custody Monday and charged with two counts of first-degree assault.

Incident Overview

Authorities were called to the scene on Cherokee Drive in Wilsonville shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday. Shelby County 911 dispatchers received a request for an ambulance after an adult female victim, who had fled to a nearby home for help, reported a gunshot wound. Deputies arrived to find the woman had been shot in the head, resulting in an ear injury. She was stabilized at the scene before being transported to UAB Hospital.

Information provided by the female victim led deputies to a second location, where they discovered an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper shoulder. That victim was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he underwent surgery to remove the bullet.

Investigation Status

Wafford, who lists an address on the same street where the violence occurred, was identified as a person of interest and remained on the scene when deputies arrived. He is currently held in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $150,000.

Sheriff John Samaniego addressed the complexity of the scene, noting that the victims and the suspect were discovered in separate locations. "I am deeply grateful to the community members who called for emergency assistance, and to our deputies and first responders who worked seamlessly to provide life-saving medical care while deputies quickly took the suspect into custody," the sheriff said. "My thoughts and prayers are with the victims as they begin their recovery."

While the investigation remains ongoing, a motive and the nature of the relationship between Wafford and the victims have not been disclosed.
