Awesome burgers, super sandwiches are big deals at this Alabama restaurant
You’ll need two hands (and extra napkins) to handle the menu items at this welcoming joint in Birmingham.
Summer budgets are feeling the squeeze, but Birmingham dining doesn't have to break the bank. 205focus.com is hunting down the best local eats where you can grab a satisfying meal for $15 or less. This week, we are highlighting a downtown gem that delivers big flavor without the heavy price tag.
A Downtown Burger Destination
Located at 2328 Second Ave. North, On a Bun is perfectly positioned in the heart of Birmingham’s bustling downtown food and entertainment corridor. Since opening in summer 2025, Crystal and Denise Peterson have turned the former Yo’ Mama’s space—which has since moved to a larger location nearby—into a casual, welcoming spot for heavy-hitting sandwiches.
The Menu
Expect more than just a standard patty. The menu features thick, juicy burgers and sandwiches using turkey, catfish, chicken, or pork chops. Whether you want traditional toppings or Southern flair—think pimento cheese, collard greens, mac and cheese, or barbecue sauce—the options are extensive. Check out the full menu here.
The creative naming pays homage to Birmingham. The Eastside combines your choice of protein with Mama’s famous hot wing sauce, lettuce, and cheddar on a brioche bun, while the 2nd Ave features grilled onions and pimento cheese on a brioche bun.
The Must-Try Item
If you are looking for a true test of your appetite, order the 4th Ave. It’s a decadent stack of mac and cheese, cheddar, and collard greens on your choice of protein. It’s essentially a full Sunday dinner served on a buttery, toasted bun—just make sure you have extra napkins handy.
