Birmingham approves nearly $400,000 in accessibility improvements for CrossPlex

The City of Birmingham is prioritizing inclusivity at one of its premier athletic venues. City officials recently greenlit a series of accessibility upgrades set to transform the experience at the CrossPlex and the adjacent Bill Harris Arena.

Investing in Accessibility

Since its inception in 2011, the 750,000-square-foot CrossPlex has served as a cornerstone for local economic growth and athletic competition. To ensure this world-class facility remains accessible to all visitors, the Birmingham City Council has approved a total investment of $381,900 for comprehensive improvements.

According to Birmingham Director of Communications Rick Journey, the project—which includes $315,000 in specific alterations identified in July 27 public records—covers a wide range of structural enhancements. Key updates include:

• Restriping parking areas to expand handicap accessibility.
• Installing updated signage.
• Lengthening handrails and modifying their heights.
• Lowering concession stand counters.
• Adjusting bathroom fixtures, door hardware, and door pressure settings.

Project Timeline and Vision

Birmingham-based Splawn Construction has been tapped to lead the renovations. While an official completion date has not yet been set, Journey confirmed that a pre-construction meeting has already taken place, signaling that work is slated to begin shortly.

These upgrades align with the city's broader commitment to ADA compliance and universal design.
