Goodman: Are Alabama’s quarterbacks really this fragile?

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer seems intent on keeping his quarterbacks under wraps, and the result is a bizarre atmosphere surrounding the Crimson Tide. During the team's media day, the program's two signal-callers, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell, were nowhere to be found, hidden away as if they were too delicate to face a few inquiries from the press.

A Delicate Situation in Tuscaloosa

The optics of keeping the faces of the program away from reporters are concerning, especially following the 38-3 loss to Indiana that left many questioning the team's toughness. Instead of galvanizing the roster during fall camp, the decision to shield the quarterbacks suggests a fear of pressure. While beat reporters like Nick Kelly, Matt Stahl, and Mike Rodak were present to cover the event, the players who are supposed to be the team's alphas were noticeably absent.

The Quarterback Competition

The ongoing uncertainty regarding the starting position is a far cry from the high-stakes battles fans are accustomed to. Regardless of who eventually wins the job, the lack of transparency at an official media event is disappointing. Athletes at the collegiate level receive compensation and should be expected to handle basic media availability. By keeping Mack and Russell in the shadows, Alabama has created more questions than they have answered. As the season approaches, one thing remains clear: at Alabama these days, it is increasingly difficult to get a straight answer.
