Homewood Partners with Greater Birmingham Humane Society for New Animal Control Services
Homewood residents should note new procedures for stray and lost pets as the city begins a partnership with the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
The City of Homewood has officially overhauled its animal control operations through a strategic partnership with the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS). Effective October 5, this collaboration involves the Homewood Police Department and local animal control officers to streamline how the municipality manages stray animals, lost pets, and local wildlife concerns. The move marks a significant shift in local public service logistics, moving away from independent city housing for displaced animals.
Under the new arrangement, any stray animals collected by authorities within the Homewood city limits will no longer be held at municipal facilities. Instead, these animals will be transported directly to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society for professional intake, medical evaluation, and temporary housing. By leveraging the specialized resources and expansive infrastructure of one of Alabama's most established animal welfare organizations, the city aims to provide higher levels of care for animals while optimizing local police resources.
For Homewood residents, this transition means that the first point of contact for reclaiming a lost pet will now be the GBHS rather than a local city precinct. This change is expected to improve the chances of pet reunions and adoptions by placing animals into a larger network of caregivers and potential adopters. As the city adapts to these new protocols, officials are encouraging pet owners to ensure their animals are microchipped and tagged to facilitate a smoother process under the new regional partnership.
