Alabama’s Republican representation in the Senate stood firmly behind President Donald Trump’s choice for attorney general, ultimately helping secure a narrow 50-49 confirmation victory on Friday. The vote concluded weeks of intense scrutiny from lawmakers concerned about whether the nominee could maintain independence from the executive branch.
The Confirmation of Todd Blanche
U.S. Sens. Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville both cast their support for Todd Blanche, the president’s former personal lawyer. Blanche stepped into the role of acting attorney general in April after President Trump fired Pam Bondi.
Following the vote, Britt took to X to voice her approval, stating, “Todd Blanche has worked diligently at the DOJ for many months to crack down on crime and keep communities safe across the nation. I know he will continue to do that as AG.”
Policy and Controversies
Blanche’s path to confirmation included significant policy shifts that generated headlines. According to The Associated Press, Blanche has been active in advancing the president’s agenda, including launching investigations into political opponents. Furthermore, he announced a $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund”, aimed at compensating individuals claiming mistreatment by the justice system, and granted Trump and his family members immunity from tax audits.
Britt’s Role in the Hearings
Throughout the confirmation process, Senator Britt emerged as a vocal proponent of the nominee. In one notable exchange during the hearings, Britt questioned Blanche on his stance regarding mail-order abortion medications. When asked if he would commit to stopping the distribution of such drugs—following the Biden administration’s removal of in-person requirements for mifepristone—Blanche replied, “Absolutely. I very much commit our resources to stopping this.”
Beyond reproductive policy, Britt also championed Blanche’s performance regarding the Epstein files. “I appreciate your commitment to all of the victims, the Epstein victims,” Britt noted during the hearing. “Your commitment to hear from them and fight for them.”
