Major retailer closing more stores while opening discount options. Here’s what’s happening
The Nordstrom company, which has four types of retail storefronts, is currently juggling its locations and inventory to better serve customers and increase profits.
Nordstrom is currently recalibrating its retail footprint, balancing a strategic shift toward discount expansion with the closure of select legacy locations. As 205focus.com previously reported, the company is pushing forward with its growth strategy by opening 26 new Nordstrom Rack stores. You can view the full list of these new locations here.
Strategic Shifts and Store Closures
Despite the push for new discount storefronts, the retail giant is trimming its operations elsewhere. According to a report from The Street, the retailer is shuttering a Nordstrom Last Chance store in Lombard, Illinois, this September. This closure will result in the loss of 101 jobs. Nordstrom stated that the move is part of an effort to optimize inventory management.
This latest closure follows a series of exits over the past two years, including four full-line stores shuttered between 2025 and 2026. Nordstrom, which has returned to private ownership through a partnership between the founding family and Mexican retailer El Puerto de Liverpool, currently manages four distinct retail models to drive profitability.
