Retiring Redstone Arsenal general praised for innovation, challenging status quo

Redstone Arsenal officially bid farewell to Lt. Gen. Chris Mohan on Friday, as the commanding general of the Army Materiel Command (AMC) relinquished his command and moved into retirement during a ceremony at the AMC headquarters.

Mohan leaves behind a legacy defined by his refusal to settle for the status quo. Serving as the senior commander during a period of massive growth for the installation—including the establishment of the U.S. Space Command headquarters and an expanded FBI presence—Mohan led the state’s largest employer and its 45,000-person workforce with a focus on modernization.

A Legacy of Innovation

Since taking the helm in March 2024, Mohan championed three core pillars: delivering ready combat formations, reimagining the organic industrial base, and enhancing the soldier experience. His tenure was marked by a push for data-driven results, the integration of artificial intelligence, and a drive to cut through bureaucratic red tape.

Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve, who hosted the retirement ceremony, praised Mohan for his 40 years of service. "Chris embodies what we want in our Senior Army Sustainer," LaNeve noted. "You cut through red tape... You have transformed the way we look at logistics."

Transforming Soldier Life and Infrastructure

Among Mohan's most visible contributions is a top-to-bottom overhaul of the Army’s food program. By partnering with industry experts to implement initiatives like Campus-Style Dining and the "Victory Fresh" program, he prioritized higher-quality nutrition for soldiers while maintaining fiscal responsibility to taxpayers. "Food is the fuel for our Soldiers, and we have a moral responsibility to give them the absolute best we can," Mohan stated.

Mohan also applied an aggressive, private-sector mindset to infrastructure. After observing the rapid construction of the FBI campus on Redstone Arsenal, he worked to designate AMC as an official Army construction agent. The goal: to adopt commercial best practices that allow for faster, more efficient building projects.

Looking Ahead

As Mohan departs, Lt. Gen. Gavin Lawrence, previously the AMC deputy commanding general, has stepped into the role of acting AMC commander and senior commander at the Arsenal. Reflecting on his time in service, Mohan expressed immense pride in the "blue-collar" work ethic of the AMC enterprise.

"AMC is an incredible sustainment enterprise and we’ve been through a lot over the past few years, but I do believe the future is very bright as long as we don’t lose our edge," Mohan said.
