Verdict handed down in murder, dismemberment of Alabama father of 4 found in burning house

A Jefferson County jury delivered guilty verdicts on Friday in the brutal 2022 murder of Nathan Gemeinhart, a local husband and father whose death shocked the community.

Youit Jones, 39, was convicted on charges of capital murder, arson, and abuse of a corpse. A sentencing hearing for Jones is set for Monday.

The Discovery of the Crime

Gemeinhart’s body was discovered on August 9, 2022, inside a burning residence in the 1300 block of Eufaula Avenue. The discovery occurred one day after the 42-year-old was reported missing. According to court records, the victim's body showed signs of extreme trauma, specifically appearing to be missing both a head and hands.

Investigators located Gemeinhart’s 2007 Toyota Corolla parked less than a block away from the crime scene on Pike Road.

A Disrupted Life

Gemeinhart, a property manager and father of four, left his southern Jefferson County home around 7:45 a.m. on August 8, 2022, to check on properties on the west side of the county. He never made it to an 11:30 a.m. meeting with his wife to attend a Meet the Teacher event for his twin daughters.

Capture and Legal Proceedings

Following the discovery, police launched a manhunt for Jones, characterizing him as armed and dangerous. Jones was eventually captured in Oklahoma after an attempted carjacking, where he was subdued by McDonald’s employees until law enforcement arrived. After local Oklahoma charges were dismissed, he was extradited back to Alabama.

Throughout the legal process, Jones consistently declined to pursue a mental state defense. While he mentioned prior diagnoses and a reported "spiritual epiphany," a judge noted in 2024 that Jones remained rational in his repeated refusal to participate in mental health evaluations regarding his state of mind at the time of the killing.
