50 players Alabama fans need to know: This young edge could spark Tide’s pass rush in 2026

EDITOR’S NOTE: As we count down to the SEC Media Days on July 20, 205focus.com is profiling one key Alabama football player every day. Today, we turn our attention to sophomore edge defender Justin Hill.

Rising Star at Edge: Justin Hill

6-foot-3, 244 pounds | Cincinnati, Ohio

While the Crimson Tide’s defensive front features a solidified anchor in Yhonzae Pierre, the staff is keeping a close eye on the development of Justin Hill. Pierre, who emerged as the team’s premier pass-rushing threat under defensive coordinator Kane Wommack during the 2025 season, offers the versatility to slide into the 'bandit' position. This transition opens the door for a new playmaker to step into the 'wolf' edge spot.

Hill, a Cincinnati native who saw extensive action on special teams as a true freshman, is poised to make that leap. Wommack has frequently praised the young defender’s approach to the game, highlighting a maturity that sets him apart from many incoming players.

A Mentality Built for Success

"He’s got a maturity about him," Wommack said. "Some of these freshmen, it amazes me... These guys come with a mentality and they’re ready to work and you see it. I walk down to the defensive staff room, and there’s freshmen in every single coach’s office. That’s a testament to our coaches, but it’s also a testament to those freshmen, and Justin Hill is a great example of that."

The former four-star recruit from Winton Woods proved his potential last year by logging 10 tackles and a pass breakup. While Hill may still be working toward a full-time starting role in 2026, he is expected to be a heavy rotation piece, particularly when the coaching staff looks to shift Pierre inside.

Pairing Hill and Pierre on the field simultaneously could provide the spark Alabama’s pass rush needs to elevate its performance beyond the post-Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell era. If Hill continues his upward trajectory, the Crimson Tide defense could look significantly more formidable up front this year.
