Discount grocery chain is closing more stores in 2026. See the list

As families across the country continue to navigate an unpredictable economic climate, the frequency of grocery store closures is becoming a recurring headline. Among those adjusting its footprint is the discount grocer Save A Lot, which has seen its total store count drop from 1,000 to 650 since 2020, according to a report by Grocery Dive.

The company notes that the grocery industry has faced significant pressure over the last six years, citing the COVID-19 pandemic, record-high inflation, and the rollback of SNAP benefits as primary drivers of these shifts. In addition to shrinking its retail footprint, the company has consolidated its operations, moving from 14 distribution centers down to seven.

David Buffa, Save A Lot’s chief legal and development officer, clarified that these reductions are strategic rather than a retreat from growth. According to Buffa, the stores leaving the network were primarily those deemed not viable for the long term. The remaining locations, he noted, represent a solid foundation for the future of the brand.
