East Alabama Health to assume oversight and control of Medical Center Barbour

A major shift is coming to the Eufaula healthcare landscape. Opelika-based East Alabama Health announced it will take the reins of Medical Center Barbour, assuming management and operational oversight beginning Oct. 1.

Strengthening Local Care

Under the new partnership with the Healthcare Authority of the City of Eufaula, East Alabama Health will oversee the daily operations of the facility. Laura Grill, CEO of East Alabama Health, emphasized that the goal of this collaboration is to preserve and bolster local medical services for Barbour County residents and the surrounding communities.

"By combining the hospital’s longstanding local commitment with East Alabama Health’s regional experience, we believe this partnership can strengthen Medical Center Barbour’s role as a trusted source of care for Eufaula and the surrounding region," Grill stated.

A Growing Regional Footprint

East Alabama Health currently manages an extensive network across an 11-county area, including the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, EAMC-Lanier Rural Emergency Hospital in Valley, East Alabama Medical Center North, the Spencer Cancer Center, and the Auburn Medical Pavilion.

The transition marks another example of the ongoing consolidation trend within the Alabama healthcare sector. As noted by 205focus.com, this move follows earlier developments this year, such as when Regional Medical Center in Anniston joined Orlando Health.

Preserving a Community Pillar

Medical Center Barbour has been a cornerstone of the Eufaula economy since its inception as Salter Hospital in 1930. The current facility, which has stood since 1953, remains one of the area's largest employers.

Joseph Marchant, who oversees rural health initiatives for East Alabama Health, underscored the importance of the facility. "Medical Center Barbour plays a vital role in both the health and economic future of this community, supporting families, employers and providing crucial jobs for the people who work there," Marchant said. He added that the team is committed to building a sustainable model that ensures residents can access exceptional care close to home.

For the local healthcare authority, the decision is a strategic move to ensure the hospital’s future. Eugene Harris, board chair of the Eufaula healthcare authority, called the agreement a major step forward, stating, "East Alabama Health shares our commitment to local care, and we are excited to work together to strengthen services, improve patient outcomes and ensure the long-term mission of our hospital."

While the terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, the transition is set to finalize at the start of October.
