Feud breaks out over scheduling of Vestavia Hills-Hoover football rivalry

The heated rivalry between Hoover and Vestavia Hills just turned up the temperature, though not for a reason you might expect on the gridiron. A bitter dispute over the scheduling of their upcoming Class 6A, Region 3 clash has left the AHSAA caught in the middle of a tug-of-war between the two schools.

The Conflict

The showdown is set for October 9, but the drama began when Vestavia Hills, acting as the host, planned to move the kickoff to Thursday, October 8. Vestavia officials cited the fall break as a primary concern, with head coach Robert Evans and athletic director Laura Casey noting that they communicated the change early to accommodate staffing and security logistics. According to Vestavia, the school had even moved games to Thursdays in the past due to similar holiday conflicts.

Hoover, however, tells a different story. In a statement provided to 205focus.com, Hoover athletic director Chris Blight maintained that the Bucs never agreed to the date change. Hoover has consistently listed the game for Friday, October 9, on their schedule since February.

AHSAA Steps In

With neither side backing down, the matter escalated to the AHSAA executive director, Heath Harmon. Vestavia initially secured a unanimous ruling in their favor from the District 5 board, but Harmon overturned that decision, effectively applying championship-level protocols—which default to a 7 p.m. Friday start—to a regular-season game. An appeal by Vestavia to the Central Board of Control resulted in the board affirming Harmon’s original ruling, cementing the Friday, October 9 date.

Vestavia officials expressed disappointment in the ruling, arguing that AHSAA bylaws do not mandate a Friday kickoff for regular-season contests. Vestavia noted that, unlike the championship tournament, regular-season scheduling has traditionally relied on the home team's discretion.

Moving Forward

The forced change has caused friction for Vestavia's families, band, cheerleaders, and staff who had made personal arrangements based on the original Thursday date. Despite the frustration, coach Evans emphasized that his program is ready to play whenever, wherever, and is shifting focus to their upcoming matchup against Parker.

History suggests this will be a game worth watching regardless of the day. According to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society, Hoover holds a 39-22 lead in the all-time series. However, the momentum has shifted recently, with the Rebels winning their last two meetings, including a 39-30 victory last season.
