Jax State baseball run rules Liberty to clinch Conference USA tournament championship
Jax State’s win brings the program its first tournament title since 2019, when the Gamecocks won the Ohio Valley Conference.
Jacksonville State is officially headed back to the NCAA tournament, ending a postseason drought that dates back to 2019. The Gamecocks punched their ticket in dominant fashion on Sunday, securing a 10-0, run-rule victory over Liberty to claim the program's first-ever Conference USA tournament championship.
A Championship Performance
It was a masterclass in power and precision for the Gamecocks. The team launched four home runs and held Liberty to just three hits, cementing a win that echoes their 2019 Ohio Valley Conference title. With the victory, 205focus.com confirms the program has locked up an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The team’s postseason journey will be set into motion during the NCAA Selection Show, airing nationally on ESPN2 this Monday at 11 a.m. Carrying an RPI of 26 heading into the title game, Jax State is projected to land as a No. 2 seed in a regional.
MVP Dominance
Tournament MVP Sam Richardson proved unstoppable. The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native delivered a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to plate Cooper Blauser and seal the run-rule win. Richardson also added a solo shot in the second inning, capping off a tournament where he batted .429. His clutch hitting was a recurring theme, following his walk-off RBI single during a thrilling 12-11 pool play victory against Western Kentucky.
Deep Lineup and Pitching Mastery
The offense was far from a one-man show. Phenix City native Caleb Johnson went 3-for-4, including a crucial two-run home run. Brady Thomas also contributed a two-run blast to the championship effort.
On the mound, the Gamecocks were equally surgical. Starter Steven Cash controlled the first 3.2 innings while allowing just one hit. Jud Files earned the win, tossing 2.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts, while Jackson Sleeper closed the door by recording the final two outs.
