North Alabama adds former NFL defensive back to coaching staff

The North Alabama Lions are bolstering their defensive coaching staff with some serious professional pedigree. 205focus.com can confirm that former NFL defensive back and Middle Tennessee standout Jovante Moffatt has officially joined the staff, as announced on Friday.

A New Voice for the Secondary

Moffatt will take on the role of safeties coach, working directly under fourth-year head coach Brent Dearmon. Regarding the move, Moffatt expressed his enthusiasm for the next chapter of his career. "I am incredibly honored and excited to begin my coaching career at the University of North Alabama," Moffatt said in a statement. "Football has always been a passion of mine, and I’m eager to learn, grow and contribute to a culture of excellence both on and off the field."

Proven Experience at Every Level

Moffatt brings a wealth of experience to the Lions. The Union City, Tennessee native entered the professional ranks as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Cleveland Browns in 2021. He appeared in 14 games during his time in Cleveland, racking up 10 tackles. His NFL journey also included stops with the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, and the Atlanta Falcons, where he saw action in three games during the 2022 season.

Before reaching the NFL, Moffatt was a defensive force at Middle Tennessee. He left a significant mark on the program, setting the school record with 55 career games played and finishing fifth in all-time tackles with 313. His collegiate career included 17 passes defended, five interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two All-Conference USA honorable mention selections.

Setting the Stage for 2026

Coach Dearmon believes Moffatt’s background will pay immediate dividends for the program. "We are blessed to add Jovante Moffatt," Dearmon said. "His college and NFL experience will be a huge asset to the development of our defensive backfield. Jovante was a leader as a player at MTSU and all his former coaches speak extremely highly of his character."

The Lions are looking to bounce back after a 2-10 campaign in 2025 that saw them go 1-7 in United Athletic Conference play. The team will look to set a new tone early when they open the season against Samford on Saturday, Aug. 29. The contest is scheduled to take place at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.
