Jefferson County’s first urban winery to host a soft opening this Saturday

Jefferson County is officially adding a new flavor to its social scene this weekend. Chateau Bevvy, the region's first urban winery, is set to host its highly anticipated soft opening this Saturday, Aug. 15.

A New Destination in Bessemer

Located at 1930 1st Avenue North in Bessemer, the winery will open its doors to the public from 12 to 7 p.m. Owner La Fran Marks, a retired Army veteran and Fairfield native, says he created the space to be a welcoming retreat where guests can leave their daily stresses at the door.

"I'm a husband, a father, a retired military professional who just happens to enjoy wine, and I want people to know that they can come to Chateau Bevvy and enjoy themselves," Marks said. "We're inviting any and everyone to come out and enjoy some locally made wine."

Crafted for Connection

Marks developed his appreciation for wine culture while serving in the Army and traveling the globe. Since returning to Alabama, he has channeled that passion into creating a unique environment that feels like coming home. The layout is designed for relaxation, leading guests through a cozy living room, dining area, and kitchen space.

While the winery does not have an attached vineyard, Marks handles all production in-house using premium juices sourced from the East Coast to Argentina.

Preserving Historic Roots

The venue is housed in a 116-year-old Bessemer building with a storied past as a former saloon and pharmacy. Marks has worked to maintain the structure's historical integrity, incorporating original exposed brick and repurposing reclaimed wood from the floor to create the bar top. He has even added a personal touch by curating vintage furniture and decor throughout the space.

"We did our best to preserve all of the historical integrity of the building," Marks noted. "We're super excited to showcase that because that tells so much about the building and everything that's gone on there."

What to Expect

For the soft launch this Saturday, guests can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere featuring smooth jazz, charcuterie boards, and a selection of food trucks.
