A tragic shooting in Sumiton on Wednesday night has left a local family devastated. Stephen Morrow, a husband and father, was killed in an incident that unfolded in a shopping complex parking lot near the Walmart on Highway 78.

Investigation Underway

Sumiton police reported that officers were dispatched to the 560 block of Highway 78 at approximately 8:59 p.m. Wednesday. Following the shooting, Morrow was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body was subsequently moved to the Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville.

Authorities have emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public as they conduct a thorough investigation. Sumiton police noted that they have refrained from releasing specific details to protect the integrity of the case. "We are still continuing to process evidence, collect video evidence and doing interviews with various witnesses," the department stated. "There will be no stone left unturned in this investigation."

A Family in Mourning

The victim is survived by his wife, Kayla, and their son, Eli. In a heartbreaking account shared on social media, Kayla revealed that her husband’s final moments were spent by her side. She recounted his tragic last words, "Kayla, I’m dying and I love you," noting that witnessing the event has been an incredibly difficult experience.

Kayla also shared that the family is navigating this trauma without the support of life insurance. To assist with funeral costs and the future needs of their son, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched. The fundraiser has already generated over $2,500 to help provide stability for Eli and his mother as they attempt to move forward.
