Man killed in exchange of gunfire at Birmingham motel was trying to rob another man, police say
Birmingham police announced Sunday night no criminal charges will be filed against the surviving man.
Birmingham police have confirmed that no criminal charges will be filed following a deadly shootout at a local motel on Friday. Authorities identified the deceased as 20-year-old Donovan Hanberry, who was fatally struck during an attempted robbery.

Officers were dispatched just after 4 p.m. to the InTown Suites Extended Stay located on Commons Drive following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, responding officers discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to Officer De’Rell Freeman, the investigation revealed that Hanberry was attempting to rob the other man at the scene, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. While Hanberry was pronounced dead at the motel, the second individual—whose identity has not been disclosed—was transported to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
