The Michigan U.S. Senate race has taken an unconventional turn. Rising Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed has proposed a bizarre resolution to his ongoing debate dispute with Republican rival Mike Rogers: a showdown on the football field.
From Debate Stage to Gridiron
El-Sayed, a former high school football team captain, issued the challenge after Rogers accused him of wanting to eliminate the sport. Rogers' comments stemmed from a series of unearthed YouTube videos—detailed in a report by CNN's KFILE—in which El-Sayed questioned whether football could be considered ethical or safe. The discovery led to reports that El-Sayed had scrubbed at least 100 old videos from his channel that he felt no longer represented his views.
The War of Words
During a Tuesday appearance with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Rogers leaned into the controversy, claiming El-Sayed held disdain for American traditions. "I want to make sure we’re protecting our faith and our families and our factories and our freedoms while he’s advocating doing away with our fireworks, football, the Fourth of July," Rogers said.
In response to the accusations and a perceived avoidance of formal campaign debates, El-Sayed turned to social media to air his frustration. In a post on X, the Democrat wrote: "Since you’re too afraid to debate me, how about you ‘hold me accountable’ on a football field instead. Tackle, no pads like we used to play when we were kids. I’d be happy to show you much I love football."

Representatives for El-Sayed have maintained that the older commentary does not align with the candidate's current positions. A statement provided to CNN noted that El-Sayed remains a fan of Michigan football and enjoys holiday traditions like Fourth of July fireworks, emphasizing that the clips circulating online are "cherry-picked" and do not reflect his beliefs today.
