Mobile hospital sets date for end of labor and delivery services

A prominent Mobile hospital has finalized plans to shutter its labor and delivery unit, marking a significant consolidation of maternity services in southwest Alabama.

End of an Era at Providence

USA Health has officially set June 30 as the final day for the labor and delivery unit at USA Health Providence Hospital in west Mobile. The decision follows the previously announced shutdown of Mobile OB-GYN, a private practice that had been a fixture at the Providence location.

Providence Hospital, which traces its roots back to the 1850s, became a part of the USA Health system in late 2023 after a major acquisition deal. The facility has undergone significant transitions since its move from Midtown to its modern west Mobile campus in the 1980s.

Consolidating Care

Starting July 1, all labor and delivery services within the USA Health network will be centralized at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital in midtown Mobile. To accommodate the influx, the health system has expanded its women’s services division, ensuring the capacity to support all patients, including those transitioning from the closing Mobile OB-GYN practice.

"We do not take this change lightly," USA Health stated, noting the deep history families have with the Providence location. "Our commitment to every expectant mother in this region remains firm, and we are confident that the expanded team at Children’s & Women’s Hospital will continue to provide the exceptional care our community deserves."

Next Steps for Patients and Staff

USA Health expressed gratitude to the departing Providence labor and delivery staff, noting that many of these skilled professionals will transition into new roles within the broader USA Health system.

Meanwhile, Mobile OB-GYN, which previously confirmed it would assist patients with transitioning their care, is set to permanently close its doors on July 2. The practice has been providing updates regarding where its physicians will be relocating via its Facebook page.

For residents in the Mobile area, labor and delivery services remain available at Infirmary Health and Springhill Medical Center.
