Mother of 2-year-old girl missing since Christmas could face death penalty

Prosecutors have officially confirmed they will seek the death penalty for an Alabama mother accused in the tragic death of her toddler daughter, a case that remains haunting as the child's body has never been located.
Adrienne Reid, 34, faces charges of capital murder, abuse of a corpse, and providing false reports to law enforcement regarding the disappearance and death of 2-year-old Genesis Reid.
The Legal Battle Ahead
Coffee County District Attorney James Tarbox filed the notice on Friday, signaling the state's intent to pursue the ultimate punishment. Reid, who entered a plea of not guilty in court last week, is currently awaiting a trial date set for early November.
Her legal team is actively pushing for a change of venue, submitting extensive evidence of social media scrutiny to argue that a fair trial in the current jurisdiction is impossible. Their filing highlights hundreds of hostile comments, including 98 insults, 27 demands for punishment, and over 150 threats or death wishes directed at the defendant.
Reid's attorney expressed confidence in the defense, telling WDHN: "She is innocent until proven guilty, and they will be trying to seek the death penalty without a body. We are looking forward to our day in court."
A Community Still Seeking Answers
Last month, investigators concluded a grueling 40-day search of an Alabama landfill without recovering the child's remains. Despite the setback, authorities emphasized their unwavering commitment to finding the truth for Genesis.
The timeline of events remains a central focus of the investigation. Reid initially reported Genesis missing at 3:10 a.m. on Feb. 16, claiming she had woken up to find her daughter gone and the door to their Enterprise home open. Investigators contend, however, that the toddler was killed on Christmas and her body was disposed of in a dumpster inside a duffel bag.
As Enterprise Police Chief Michael Moore previously stated, the community remains deeply wounded. "The one painful question that continues to weigh on the hearts of the community – what happened to Genesis after Christmas night?" Moore said. "Only one person truly knows where Genesis’s remains are and that person has repeatedly chosen deception over truth."
