1 dead, 2 injured in afternoon crash in east Birmingham

A tragic afternoon collision has left one person dead and two others injured on Birmingham’s east side, according to officials.

The two-vehicle accident occurred at 3 p.m. Thursday in the 6300 block of First Avenue North. Emergency crews from the Birmingham Police Department, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to assist those involved.
Investigation and Injuries
Birmingham Police Officer De’Rell Freeman confirmed that a man inside one of the involved vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman from the same vehicle was transported to a local hospital; it remains under investigation whether she was ejected from the car or exited on her own prior to the arrival of first responders.
The driver of the second vehicle was pinned in the wreckage before being extricated by rescue crews and subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment.
Additionally, a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy suffered a hand injury while assisting with rescue efforts at the site. Officer Freeman clarified that the incident was not a result of a police chase.
