50 players Alabama fans need to know: The Big 12 transfer who’s ‘getting after guys’
If or when Josh Ford pancakes some guys this fall, don’t be surprised.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Leading up to the official start of the preseason at SEC Media Days on July 20, 205focus.com is spotlighting one Alabama football player each day. Today, we focus on transfer addition Josh Ford.
Improving the ground game is a clear priority for Alabama in 2026. While the spotlight often falls on the offensive line and the running back room, the tight end position serves as a critical cog in the machine. That is exactly why Josh Ford is a name to know.
Adding Physicality to the Attack
The Oklahoma State transfer brings a necessary, gritty edge to the Crimson Tide offense. Much like established threats such as Robbie Ouzts and CJ Dippre, Ford is viewed as a tone-setter who can bolster the run game with his physical style of play.
Alabama secured the junior tight end following a significant roster overhaul in Stillwater. He joins a room that already features returners Marshall Pritchett and Kaleb Edwards, and coaching staff expectations for an immediate impact are high.
Setting the Standard
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has already seen the positive ripple effects of Ford’s arrival. Speaking on the Martin Houston Show this offseason, DeBoer noted the immediate energy the newcomer has injected into the squad.
“We haven’t played one down of football yet this year, but I can tell you his mindset, what he’s done, he’s come in, he’s one guy that has helped just with the energy and us in the run game,” DeBoer said. “He’s getting after guys.”
DeBoer highlighted Ford’s intensity during spring practices, noting that his habit of putting teammates on their backs creates a contagious level of competitiveness. “That’s what you’ve got to have,” the coach added.
While Ford recorded 13 catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns across 16 games at Oklahoma State, his primary value in Tuscaloosa will likely manifest at the point of attack as a blocker. If you see him pancaking defenders this fall, do not be surprised.
COMING SUNDAY: We take a closer look at Alabama offensive lineman Nick Brooks.
