Troy keeps its baseball season alive with comeback win over Ole Miss in College World Series
Troy baseball picked up its first ever College World Series win on Sunday by taking down Ole Miss
The Cinderella run is alive and well. Troy baseball kept its season breathing on Sunday, eliminating Ole Miss from the College World Series with a gritty 12-8 comeback victory.
The win marks a historic milestone for the Trojans, who secured their first-ever College World Series victory. With the Rebels heading home, Troy now prepares for another elimination matchup on Tuesday at 1 p.m. CT against the winner of the North Carolina and West Virginia game.
A Furious Rally
Things looked bleak early on as Ole Miss jumped out to an early advantage thanks to two-run home runs from Brayden Randle and Collin Reuter. Trailing 6-2 heading into the fifth inning, the Trojans ignited their offense and scored seven unanswered runs to flip the momentum.
The turnaround began in the fifth inning against Ole Miss starter Hunter Elliott. Following a controversial bases-loaded balk that scored a run, Troy second baseman Sean Darnell capitalized with a clutch single through the left side to plate two more runners.
The seventh inning proved to be the turning point. Jimmy Janicki sparked the surge with a solo home run—his 21st of the season—before Jabe Boroff delivered a massive line drive into the left-field corner that drove in Darnell and Drew Nelson. Houston Markham later chipped in with an RBI, and a pair of late-inning insurance runs came off a costly Ole Miss infield error, allowing Troy to pull away.
Stellar Relief Pitching
While the offense provided the fireworks, Noah Thigpen was the anchor on the mound. Entering with a 6.29 ERA, Thigpen delivered a masterful performance, logging five innings of relief and surrendering just two earned runs. His stability was critical, providing the necessary cushion after early struggles from starters Tommy Egan and Hayden Smith.
"Just so happy for our guys," Troy head coach Skylar Meade said postgame. "So happy that we do not play tomorrow because I’m sure everyone’s exhausted. But just a tremendous day for the Trojans."
While the path to the championship series remains challenging, the Trojans proved they are not ready to bow out just yet, securing a thrilling win that will go down in program history as reported by 205focus.com.
