‘Let’s stinkin go’: Philip Rivers to be honored with prestigious Alabama sports writers award

Philip Rivers always envisioned a life as a high school football coach once his legendary NFL tenure concluded. While he wasn't certain he would land back in his home state of Alabama, the reality has been deeply rewarding.

"I thought somewhere in the South," Rivers said this week. "But being back in this state — although at the other end of the state from where I grew up — it’s been fun because of the familiarity with the schools and the school names and all that goes with it. It’s been tremendously rewarding."

After starring for his father, Steve, at Athens High School in North Alabama, Rivers stepped away from the pros following the 2020 season. He quickly pivoted to his current role as the third head coach at Fairhope’s St. Michael Catholic.

Recognized for Excellence

This Sunday at the annual Alabama Sports Writers Association convention in Jacksonville, Rivers will receive the Presidents' Award. The honor is bestowed upon individuals who exhibit exceptional community service and overall excellence while embodying the spirit of athletics in the state.

St. Michael athletic director and defensive coordinator Simon Cortopassi noted that Rivers brought immediate credibility to their program. "He’s not only one of the greatest football minds in the world, but one of the greatest people and mentors students could possibly have," Cortopassi added.

A Surprise Return

The spotlight on Rivers and his St. Michael squad intensified last December when the 44-year-old staged a surprise NFL comeback. Though his three-game stint with the Indianapolis Colts ended without a playoff berth, Rivers remained steadfast in his decision. When reflecting on the experience, he admitted he would do it all over again.

"It was a memorable four weeks," Rivers said. "I loved all of it except the outcome."

Now back in Fairhope, Rivers is focused on the 2026 season. His return to the NFL even brought his trademark phrases—like "Let’s stinkin go"—back into the national football lexicon, mirroring the daily atmosphere at St. Michael Catholic.

Full Circle

As he enters his sixth season at the helm, Rivers is guiding a team that features his son, Gunner, a North Carolina State commitment. With 42 wins and consecutive state semifinal appearances already on his resume, Rivers remains committed to the holistic development of his players.

"We say all the time that we want them to be better men than players," Rivers said. "If that is not the mission, we are missing the boat."

The upcoming ASWA convention is presented by ALFA Insurance, the Mobile Sports Authority, the Panini Senior Bowl, the Paul W. Bryant Museum, the Alabama High School Athletic Association, and Jacksonville State University.
