Jax State's late-game dramatics come up short in regional loss to Little Rock
Little Rock makes history as Jax State faces elimination on Sunday afternoon in Hattiesburg, MS.
Just over 24 hours after a statement win over No. 2 Virginia, the third-seeded Jacksonville State Gamecocks found themselves facing a massive hurdle in the Hattiesburg regional. No. 4 Little Rock delivered an early blow, handing the Gamecocks (47-14) a defeat that forces JSU into an uphill battle for survival.
Early Deficit Costs the Gamecocks
The Trojans (38-26) jumped on Jax State starter Ryan Geraghty immediately, putting up three runs in the first inning. Geraghty was chased from the game after yielding three earned runs and four hits across just 24 pitches.
Jax State attempted to chip away at the lead, finding some rhythm in the second inning thanks to Thomas Brady, who launched his 11th home run of the season to right field. Despite the spark, the Gamecocks struggled to maintain momentum, highlighted by a momentum-stalling pickoff of Matthew Cash at second base.
A Late-Game Rally Falls Short
After the Gamecocks narrowed the gap to two runs in the seventh, Little Rock responded in the eighth with a crucial two-run single from Nico Baumbach, pushing their lead to 8-4. Jax State refused to go quietly, pushing two runs across in the bottom of the eighth and forcing Little Rock to pull pitcher Gage Haley.
The drama peaked in the ninth inning. With two outs and runners on, Cooper Blauser lofted a deep drive to right-center field, but Michael O'Brien hauled it in to seal the victory for the Trojans.
Path to Survival
Little Rock's win, fueled by Isaac Evaniew’s victory and a save from Tag Andrews, makes them the 12th No. 4 seed to open an NCAA regional with two consecutive wins since the current format began in 1999.
For Jax State, the mission is now clear: win to stay alive. The Gamecocks are scheduled for a rematch against Virginia on Sunday at 3 p.m., which can be viewed on ESPN+. Should they survive the Cavaliers, they are slated for another showdown with Little Rock later that night at 8 p.m. as they fight to extend their season at 205focus.com.
