72-year-old man killed when John Deere tractor hit by 18-wheeler in south Alabama

A tragic accident in south Alabama has claimed the life of 72-year-old Flomaton resident James R. Ward. The fatal collision occurred when the John Deere tractor Ward was operating was struck by an 18-wheeler.
Details of the Incident
According to Alabama State Troopers, the crash took place at 1:40 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6. The incident occurred on Alabama 113, approximately 11 miles north of Flomaton.
ALEA Capt. Jeremy Burkett confirmed that Ward was driving a 1977 John Deere 4430 tractor while towing a hay baler at the time of the collision. The tractor was struck by a Kenworth tractor-trailer operated by 43-year-old Daniel L. Wilson of Florida. Ward was pronounced dead at the scene, while Wilson was transported to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital in Brewton for treatment of his injuries.
A Life Dedicated to Agriculture and Service
James R. Ward was a deeply respected member of the community. A proud graduate of Flomaton High School, he later earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture education from Auburn University.
His obituary highlights a lifelong passion for his profession, noting, “Mr. Ward loved farming and being out in the field, planting and harvesting his crops. He enjoyed it more when his two sons joined him. He loved tending to his cows and helping others.”
Beyond his agricultural work, Ward was a dedicated deacon and Sunday School teacher at Unity Baptist Church. Friends and family are set to gather for his funeral services this Thursday.
