Decatur city employee killed while responding to storm damage: ‘Heartbroken by his loss’

The city of Decatur is in mourning following the tragic death of Chris Seal, a dedicated veteran of the Parks and Recreation Department. Seal passed away after sustaining critical injuries while on duty during a storm response late Sunday night.

Tragedy During Storm Recovery

According to an official news release, Seal and a colleague were working to clear a fallen tree limb near the intersection of Fourth Avenue Northwest and Third Street Northwest. While they were engaged in the cleanup, a second limb fell, striking both employees.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene and transported Seal for urgent medical treatment, but he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Seal was a fixture in the community, having served the city and its residents for 21 years.

A Community in Mourning

Decatur Mayor Kent Lawrence expressed the deep impact of this loss, highlighting Seal's commitment to the city. "Chris was a valued member of our city family who dedicated more than two decades of his life to serving this community," Lawrence said. "We are heartbroken by his loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and coworkers."

Mayor Lawrence emphasized that the city is committed to supporting those affected by the tragedy. "This is a devastating loss for our entire organization, especially those who worked alongside Chris each day," he added. "We will support his family and our employees as they grieve."
