Alabama OC Ryan Grubb Fires Back at 'Boo-Birds' After Resilient Win Over Florida State

The Alabama Crimson Tide may be sitting at 3-0, but their journey to a perfect start hasn't been without friction. During a Monday press conference in Tuscaloosa, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb addressed the 'boo-birds' that emerged early in Saturday's contest as the Tide fell behind 21-6 to the underdog Florida State Seminoles.

Grubb revealed a blunt message he delivered to his squad on the sidelines when the crowd at Bryant-Denny Stadium grew restless. "I told the guys, I said ‘Shoot guys, if you’d have quit as fast as some of your fans, shit, we wouldn’t have won that game,’" Grubb told reporters.

Despite the early struggles and two lengthy lightning delays—one prior to kickoff and another in the second quarter—Alabama’s offense eventually exploded. The Crimson Tide hung 50 points on the Seminoles in a 50-36 win, highlighted by what Grubb called quarterback Keelon Russell’s best game in a UA uniform.

"I was proud of them," Grubb said. "For a bunch of 19-year-olds to go out there and just (be down) 21-6 and not flinch, I was fired up."

Head coach Kalen DeBoer echoed the sentiment of toughness, praising the team's ability to support one another when adversity strikes. DeBoer noted that while he is proud of the team’s chemistry, the focus remains on continuous improvement and moving past the slow starts that have affected the team in consecutive weeks.

Grubb analyzed the early offensive stalls, suggesting the unit was closer to success than it appeared. He pointed to a missed down block on a critical third-and-three and a route-running miscommunication between Russell and receiver Lotzeir Brooks as the primary reasons for the early punts.

Alabama will look to snap its streak of slow starts this Saturday as they host South Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at Bryant-Denny Stadium, with the game set to be broadcast on ESPN.
