Alabama QB Keelon Russell Garners National Freshman of the Week Honors After FSU Takedown

Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell is turning heads across the country, even if there is a bit of confusion regarding his classification. Following a stellar outing in a 50-36 victory over Florida State, the Maxwell Football Club named Russell the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Week on Tuesday. While Alabama’s official roster lists Russell as a sophomore, the Maxwell Football Club referred to him as a “redshirt freshman” in their announcement. The discrepancy stems from the NCAA’s modern eligibility model; although Russell met redshirt criteria last season, the term is increasingly viewed as outdated on official rosters. Regardless of the label, Russell joins elite company, following in the footsteps of former Crimson Tide stars Will Anderson and Caleb Downs as winners of the honor named after the legendary Alabama running back.

Russell’s performance against the Seminoles marked a career high for the young signal-caller. He was surgical in the pocket, completing 23 of 30 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns. He added a fourth score on the ground, proving why he won the starting job over Austin Mack during the offseason. After the game, Russell noted that his comfort level within the offense is reaching new heights. “Most definitely slowing down,” Russell said regarding the pace of the game. “Just playing with that sense of, my biggest thing was just operating in and out the huddle. Phenomenal job today. Still can do better on the things that we can do better.”

He highlighted the team's improved efficiency, noting they were breaking the huddle with 19 seconds remaining on the play clock. “We were able to see the protections more clear. Got to a couple of the stuff that we talked about this week. And just, yeah, the game moves way slower when you know you’re able to move faster as an offense,” he added. Russell and the Crimson Tide will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup. Alabama returns to Bryant-Denny Stadium this Saturday to face South Carolina, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN.
