The basketball world is mourning the loss of a true legend. Rick Adelman, an iconic figure who patrolled the sidelines for over two decades, has passed away at the age of 79.
An NBA Legacy
According to the NBA Coaches Association, Adelman died on Monday, just 15 days before he would have celebrated his 80th birthday.
A true lifer in the sport, Adelman left his mark across the league, serving as head coach for the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Golden State Warriors. Throughout his distinguished career, he amassed 1,042 victories, a record that currently places him 10th on the NBA's all-time wins list.
Defining Success
While he never took home the NBA Coach of the Year award, Adelman was a consistent winner. He guided his squads to the playoffs in 14 of his 23 seasons, most notably steering the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals in both 1990 and 1992.
His reputation as a premier tactician was cemented by his three selections as head coach for the Western Conference All-Star team. The coaching lineage continues today, as his son, David, is currently leading the Denver Nuggets as their head coach.
