Birmingham police shoot, kill wanted suspect, multiple guns recovered
The shooting happened in the 100 block of B.Y. Williams Sr. Drive.
A confrontation between Birmingham police and a group of suspects ended in a fatal shooting Wednesday night. Officers, who were actively searching for two individuals wanted on multiple violent felony charges, engaged the suspects during an operation in Midfield.
The Incident
The shooting took place shortly after 9:30 p.m. in a parking lot near the Circle K located in the 100 block of B.Y. Williams Sr. Drive. According to Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, the incident began when officers approached a vehicle occupied by the suspects. Upon the officers' approach, one of the wanted men exited the vehicle, at which point he was shot by police.
While investigators have confirmed that multiple guns were recovered from the scene, authorities have not yet specified what exactly prompted the police to open fire.
Aftermath and Investigation
Responding officers immediately initiated CPR on the scene. The individual was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was ultimately pronounced dead. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased as 19-year-old Xavier Marquez Gray of Birmingham.
Sgt. Wade noted that three other occupants of the vehicle were taken to Birmingham police headquarters for questioning. The investigation into the shooting is being led by the Birmingham Police Department.
