CFL Grey Cup champion, team captain dies in car accident

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are mourning the loss of a leader and teammate following the sudden death of linebacker and team captain Jayden Dalke. The 30-year-old CFL standout passed away Saturday evening following a car accident, the organization confirmed.

A Legacy on and off the Field

In an official news release, the Roughriders honored Dalke as a “relentless warrior” whose work ethic and toughness defined the team's identity. Beyond his physical play, the franchise highlighted his character, noting that Dalke possessed a unique ability to make everyone around him feel valued and special.

“On and off the field, he was the true definition of what it means to be a Saskatchewan Roughrider,” the team wrote. “We will miss him terribly and will never forget the impact he had on our lives and our team.”

Dalke, a sixth-round selection in the 2022 CFL draft out of the University of Alberta, spent his entire five-year career in Saskatchewan. Across 68 games from 2022 to 2026, he cemented himself as a vital piece of the roster, most notably helping the Roughriders capture the Grey Cup title in 2025.

The broader Canadian football community is also reflecting on Dalke's life and service. CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston released a statement expressing the league's condolences.
