East Alabama Health to assume oversight and control of Medical Center Barbour

Big changes are coming to Eufaula as Opelika-based East Alabama Health prepares to take the reins of Medical Center Barbour. Starting Oct. 1, the regional health giant will officially assume operational and management oversight of the facility, aiming to bolster local medical services.

A Partnership for Regional Growth

Under a new agreement with the Healthcare Authority of the City of Eufaula, East Alabama Health will oversee the daily operations of the hospital. East Alabama Health CEO Laura Grill emphasized that the collaboration is designed to preserve and strengthen health care access for residents across Barbour County.

"By combining the hospital’s longstanding local commitment with East Alabama Health’s regional experience, we believe this partnership can strengthen Medical Center Barbour’s role as a trusted source of care for Eufaula and the surrounding region," Grill stated in an announcement.

Strengthening a Local Anchor

Medical Center Barbour, a major Eufaula employer, traces its roots back to 1930 as Salter Hospital, with its current facility opening in 1953. Joseph Marchant, who heads rural health initiatives at East Alabama Health, noted the facility's critical importance to the area's economic and physical health.

"We look forward to working alongside the hospital’s leadership, providers, employees and community stakeholders to honor Medical Center Barbour’s long history of serving Eufaula and the surrounding region and develop a sustainable model to ensure residents receive exceptional care, close to home," Marchant said.

Eugene Harris, board chair of the Eufaula healthcare authority, echoed that sentiment, calling the deal a "major step forward" for both the hospital and its patients, aimed at improving outcomes and ensuring the long-term mission of the institution.

Industry Trends

While the terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the shift reflects a broader wave of consolidation across the state’s medical landscape. Earlier this year, Anniston’s Regional Medical Center joined Orlando Health as part of a significant transformation in the Alabama market.

East Alabama Health currently manages a wide network of providers, including the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, EAMC-Lanier Rural Emergency Hospital in Valley, East Alabama Medical Center North, the Spencer Cancer Center, and the Auburn Medical Pavilion, serving an 11-county region.
