Former Birmingham cop allegedly raped teen he met on-duty while mother was in another room

A judge ruled on Monday that a former Birmingham police officer facing serious sex crime charges will remain held without bond. The decision follows an Aniah’s Law hearing and a preliminary hearing for 38-year-old Gregory Thompson.

Gregory Thompson is charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sex abuse, and traveling to meet a child for an unlawful sex act. Thompson, who had been with the Birmingham Police Department since 2018, resigned his position shortly before his arrest by the department's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team.
Details of the Case
Testimony provided by Jefferson County sheriff’s Deputy Ashondra Jackson revealed that Thompson first encountered the 14-year-old victim while on-duty earlier this year during a service call at her home. Investigators allege Thompson used that interaction to obtain the girl’s contact information and initiate communication.
On March 28, Thompson reportedly picked up the teenager and took her to a store to purchase food and vapes. According to court testimony, he then took the victim to his own home, where his mother was in a separate room. Prosecutors allege that Thompson forced himself upon the teen. While Thompson admitted to investigators that sexual contact occurred, he has denied the rape charge.
Court Ruling
During Monday’s proceedings, Deputy District Attorney Tiffany Ould represented the state, while Thompson was defended by the Jefferson County Public Defender’s Office. Jefferson County Circuit Judge Shanta Owens ultimately determined that the state presented enough evidence to move the case forward to a grand jury for potential indictment.
In her ruling to deny bond, Judge Owens noted that the prosecution proved by clear and convincing evidence that no release conditions could sufficiently protect the community or ensure the defendant’s future appearance in court.
