Major delays expected as US-280 at Pump House Road is set to close for bridge work
US-280 at Pump House Road will close nightly June 5-8 for the widening project, with major detours and delays expected.
Motorists traveling through the Birmingham area should prepare for significant travel disruptions. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is preparing for the final closure of all US-280 lanes at Pump House Road to facilitate essential bridge girder installations.
Construction and Closure Timeline
Starting Friday, June 5, at 11 p.m., crews will shut down US-280 in both directions at Pump House Road to set the final two bridge girders, assuming favorable weather conditions. This work is a pivotal stage in the ongoing project to expand US-280 to four lanes in each direction from Lakeshore Parkway to I-459—a critical stretch of road that serves over 100,000 drivers daily.
ALDOT anticipates that once this project reaches completion in early October, it will drastically improve traffic capacity. This current phase involves setting two girders to expand the bridge, providing space for a sidewalk and a center turn lane over the highway. Since the project's inception in Spring 2025, crews have already installed three girders and demolished the previous bridge structure.
Detours and Traffic Flow
Expect major delays during the work period. The current traffic management schedule is as follows:
- Westbound Lanes: Expected to remain closed through the morning of Monday, June 8.
- Eastbound Lanes: Scheduled to reopen Saturday and Sunday at 5 a.m., with nightly closures resuming at 11 p.m.
- Pump House Road: Will be closed at night while cranes lift the girders. During these periods, the eastbound off-ramp at Pump House Road will also be inaccessible.
ALDOT advises commuters to utilize detours, specifically suggesting that drivers take I-459 to I-65 to Lakeshore Parkway to rejoin US-280. For those heading in the opposite direction, the reverse route is recommended. Local traffic will be directed to exit at Green Valley Road during the closure.
ALDOT expects all lanes of US-280 at Pump House Road to be fully reopened to traffic no later than 6 a.m. on Monday, June 8. Stay tuned to 205focus.com for the latest local infrastructure updates.
