Orange Beach tight end Lee Steele plans to make his grandfather proud

For Lee Steele, the path to a college scholarship is paved with personal meaning. The Orange Beach High School standout is currently navigating the early stages of a high-profile recruitment process, but for the talented junior, every decision is tied to the memory of his late grandfather.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Steele recalls his childhood in Flomaton, where he spent his early years alongside his grandfather, watching Alabama football, Daniel Boone, and John Wayne. Even though his grandfather passed away when Steele was just five years old, his impact remains the driving force behind Steele's athletic pursuits.

"He is my motivation and definitely why I play football and even basketball," Steele said. "That is my purpose for playing. Him being an Alabama fan and me being from the state of Alabama carries a lot of weight."

Dual-Sport Dilemma

Standing 6-foot-7 and weighing 220 pounds, Steele faces a unique crossroads: deciding which sport will become his collegiate focus. On the basketball court, he is already a major-college prospect who has surpassed 1,000 career points with two seasons still to play. On the gridiron, he is a rising talent who caught 25 passes for 341 yards and a touchdown as a sophomore.

The interest is high across the football landscape. Steele sports wristbands representing several schools vying for his commitment, including Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Alabama. He credits his lifelong experience at quarterback and receiver for helping him transition into a versatile tight end.

The Road Ahead

Orange Beach coach Wade Waldrop believes the best is yet to come for his young star. "He’s just scratching the surface of what he will be," Waldrop said. "He’s the youngest of four boys, so he’s tough. He carries that competitiveness with him into everything he does. Ability-wise and in terms of measurables, he’s got every one of them."

As Steele prepares to take on a more prominent role as a tight end and outside linebacker this season, the eyes of the state are on him.
