How one hire changed Auburn basketball’s entire offseason after they missed the NCAA tournament
General manager Brian Kloman arrived from Louisville and helped Steven Pearl secure commitments from Owen Freeman, George Kimble III and five other key additions for the 2026-27 season.
The landscape for Auburn basketball looks drastically different this offseason. After a transitional 2025-26 campaign defined by the final run of Bruce Pearl's tenure and a subsequent 17-16 record that left the Tigers out of the NCAA tournament, the program is pivoting toward a more streamlined approach for the 2026-27 season.
A New Blueprint
While last year’s squad salvaged their momentum by capturing the program’s first-ever NIT title, Steven Pearl is entering his second year as head coach with a revamped strategy. The centerpiece of this transformation is the addition of general manager Brian Kloman. Brought in from Louisville in March, Kloman fills a front-office void that didn't exist during the Tigers' chaotic roster construction a year ago.
Bruce Pearl offered high praise for the move, telling 205focus.com, "He made a great hire in (GM) Brian Kloman. From a front office standpoint, he’s one of the top five guys in his field. So, that’s big for the future of the program."
Strategic Gains
Kloman arrives with a proven track record, having helped orchestrate a rapid turnaround at Louisville. His immediate impact on the Plains was visible during this spring’s recruiting cycle. According to Steven Pearl, the previous staff often found themselves playing catch-up due to late-season tournament preparation. With Kloman on board, the Tigers were able to execute a proactive plan the moment the transfer portal opened.
The results speak for themselves: five recruits visited campus, and all five committed to the program. The aggressive, organized approach has secured a haul that includes center Bukky Oboye (Santa Clara), Owen Freeman (Creighton), Thomas Dowd (Troy), Adam Olsen (South Alabama), George Kimble III (Vanderbilt), 7-foot center Narcisse Ngoy, and high school standout Caleb Williams. Additionally, the team is awaiting a signature from Lithuanian guard Mantas Rubštavičius.
Looking Ahead
With 10 new players entering the fold, the coaching staff is wasting no time. Preparations for the 2026-27 season begin this June, followed by a highly anticipated foreign tour in Greece scheduled for August.
