Police, firefighters honor birthday of child killed in accidental Bessemer shooting

Bessemer police officers and firefighters came together on Friday to honor the memory of Julian Green, a young life lost far too soon. On what would have been his 6th birthday, first responders returned to the home where the community continues to grieve following a tragic accidental shooting.
A Community in Mourning

Bessemer police Lt. Charlie Burton noted that the responders felt a deep personal connection to the tragedy. "These cops and these firefighters are human too," Burton said. "They just wanted to do something because it touched them all because they have kids. It’s just something they wanted to do with today being his birthday."
The Tragic Timeline
Authorities were dispatched to the Carolina Avenue home at 12:26 p.m. on Wednesday. Upon arrival, officers discovered Julian suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed via ambulance to UAB Medical West Hospital, he was tragically pronounced dead at 1:06 p.m. While an adult family member was home during the incident and subsequently questioned, police confirmed that no criminal charges are expected.
