Police, firefighters honor birthday of child killed in accidental Bessemer shooting

Bessemer police officers and firefighters came together on Friday to honor the memory of Julian Green, a 5-year-old boy whose life was tragically cut short following an accidental shooting earlier this week. The day held a somber significance, as it would have been Julian’s 6th birthday.

Honoring a Young Life

The first responders who originally arrived at the scene of the tragedy returned to the home on Friday, where the front steps have since been adorned with balloons and stuffed animals as a memorial. Lt. Charlie Burton of the Bessemer Police Department explained that the officers and firefighters felt a deep, personal connection to the situation.

"They just wanted to do something because it touched them all because they have kids," Burton said. "These cops and these firefighters are human too. It’s just something they wanted to do with today being his birthday."

A Community in Mourning

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday when police were dispatched at 12:26 p.m. to a residence located in the 3000 block of Carolina Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered Julian suffering from a gunshot wound. The child was transported via ambulance to UAB Medical West Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead at 1:06 p.m.

While an adult family member was present in the home at the time of the incident and was subsequently questioned by investigators, officials stated that no criminal charges are expected.

In a heartfelt post shared to Facebook, Bessemer police reflected on the boy's untimely passing: "At just 5 years old, Julian’s life was tragically cut short in Bessemer. His smile, his innocence, and the joy he brought to those who loved him will never be forgotten. Our hearts remain with his family, friends, and everyone in our community who continues to grieve this unimaginable loss."

Police are now using the heartbreaking event as a catalyst to urge residents to prioritize gun safety in their homes. "As we honor Julian’s memory, let us also recommit ourselves to protecting the children in our homes and neighborhoods," the department stated. "Every child deserves the chance to grow up, play, dream, and thrive. Julian’s life mattered. His memory matters.
